Adjusting to your new dentures
The first couple of weeks with new dentures take some getting used to — mild soreness in a few spots, extra saliva, and slightly different speech are all completely normal as your mouth adapts. Start with softer foods and small bites, gradually working back to your regular diet as confidence builds.
If a specific spot stays sore for more than a couple of days, come back for a quick adjustment rather than pushing through it — a small reshape of the denture edge usually solves it immediately. Most patients feel fully comfortable within a few weeks.
Reading aloud for a few minutes a day is a simple trick that speeds up adjusting to speaking normally with new dentures, and cutting food into smaller pieces while chewing evenly on both sides helps you find your rhythm faster.
Caring for your dentures long-term
Clean your dentures daily with a soft brush and denture-specific cleaner (not regular toothpaste, which can be too abrasive), and rinse them after every meal to keep them free of food particles. Remove them at night and soak in water or a denture solution — giving your gums a rest is important for oral health.
Your jawbone and gums change shape gradually over time, even after tooth loss, so dentures typically need relining or replacing every few years to keep fitting well. Regular check-ups let us catch fit changes early, before they cause discomfort or affect how well the denture stays in place.
Handle your dentures over a folded towel or a basin of water when cleaning them, since they can crack if dropped on a hard surface — and check periodically for small cracks or rough spots that could irritate your gums.
A common worry before getting dentures for the first time is whether they'll look obviously fake or change how your face looks — in reality, well-made dentures are shaped to support your lips and cheeks the way your natural teeth did, which often makes patients look more like themselves, not less, compared to the sunken appearance that can develop after tooth loss goes unaddressed.
